Public Sector Good Governance: Steering your organisation through challenging times
Code of Good Higher Education Governance Published
19th Jul 2013
The Chairs of Scotland’s Universities on the 18th July 2013 published a new Code of Good Higher Education Governance ahead of the new academic year. Following two substantial periods of consultation, the Code is designed to improve the role of students and staff in governance, offer direction on the role of the rector for the ancient universities and provide clarity to executive staff in supporting the governing body. This code will also involve an exclusive membership of governing bodies to be more representative and announce requirements for greater transparency and clarity.
Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chair of the Steering Group, who spoke at our Green Investment Bank Conference in May 2013, says in his Preface of the Code: "I believe it will result in significantly more transparent and accountable governance of universities, led by governing bodies with a greater diversity of membership. The strength and scope of the debate on the Code has highlighted the importance of our universities to Scotland’s future. I believe that the new Code will help them to achieve even greater success."
