Scotland has stringent targets to meet in waste reduction and recycling for 2013. However the infrastructure required to achieve those targets is not yet in place, and in most cases, not yet contracted. The aim of this conference is to explore the practical ways forward to deliver cost effective and workable infrastructure and systems that will enable these Scottish targets to be met. Whether you are in the public sector anxious to secure infrastructure or in the private sector and keen to win contracts, there is a common purpose in the need to divert waste from landfill.
If you are responsible for waste management in a Scottish local authority or have a role to play in developing an effective waste management strategy in Scotland, there are five key questions which need to be answered now:
Both the timescale and targets are very challenging but there are a variety of potential solutions available and the way forward will certainly not be a "one size fits all" solution. The waste market in Scotland has developed more slowly than in England and Wales, but the coming months will be critical in helping to deliver the solutions that Scotland needs.
The Scottish market is built around the Scottish Councils which tend to be smaller than the rest of the UK. This difference in scale offers the prospect of a diverse range of opportunities - including prospects for new entrants to the Scottish market - and more opportunities for "merchant" facilities.
This conference brings together a range of key players in the public and private sectors to look at the approaches which have already worked, the different scale of solutions available in terms of funding, infrastructure and processes and the ways in which it is possible to partner. The conference will look at how to ensure there is a real competition for future contracts and how to ensure there is a viable waste market with innovation and solutions tailored to the shape of the Scottish waste challenge.
