When the Scottish Civil Courts Review was published on 30th September 2009, Lord Gill said that without dramatic reforms, the reputation of Scots law would continue to diminish along with public confidence in the judiciary.

Lord Gill, the lord justice clerk, said the system was outdated, expensive, unpredictable and inefficient - and that it was failing society and putting economic development at risk.  He identified three areas that his report would address - namely access to law, delay and inefficiency.

This conference will look at the proposed changes to Scotland's legal system and the impact this will have on the Scottish judiciary system.

Delegates will have the opportunity to

• Learn about Lord Gill's proposals for reform
• Understand the impact on work practices which these reforms may have for all stakeholders in the legal system
• Discuss how the current proposals need to be shaped in order to work in practice
• Consider whether these proposals will create a better balance for consumers in the legal system
• Examine how the introduction of specialist sheriffs could affect areas of law such as crime and personal injury
• Explore the role mediation could play in the new system
