We live in an increasingly carbon conscious world where consumers and producers have to be aware of the impact of their activities on our climate. The UN Copenhagan conference on climate change sets new strategic challenges in carbon reduction. Against that background, why does carbon counting matter and how can you make it work for you?
As more consumers ask: "How much carbon are you emitting?", public and private sector organisations will need to be able to demonstrate that they are both measuring and managing their carbon footprint. Last May, Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps became the first consumer food item anywhere in the world to carry a label on its packet detailing its carbon footprint. Using pioneering techniques and measuring systems, Walkers have established that the carbon footprint of each packet of crips weighs in at 75g.
"Increasing numbers of companies are reducing their operational carbon emissions and the next step to further reduce these emissions is to target end products and services", explains Jim Peacock from the Carbon Trust which is coordinating the project. "To do this we need to establish the carbon footprint of the entire supply chain which will identify where carbon savings can be made".
This conference will present the main carbon counting methods, with case studies and rationales on how they are being used, discussions around the units and factors used in their calculations and on their wider relevance. It will also examine some of the opportunities available now to dramatically reduce carbon footprints, and reduce costs, in both the private and public sectors.
