The “Better Health, Better Care: Action plan” published last year, outlined the Government’s vision for a local public health strategy – to attempt to make the NHS more accessible through the enhanced delivery of a comprehensive local public health service, whilst also ensuring the public enjoys greater influence in the planning and delivery of that service.
Through the Action Plan and the subsequent “Delivering for Remote and Rural Healthcare” report, the Government has sought to emphasize the development of a local public healthcare strategy by introducing an “integrated resource framework” for Community Health Partnerships (CHPs); promising an enhanced role for Community Hospitals and Rural General Hospitals in delivering health care in remote and rural areas; and the creation of Extended Community Care Teams.
As part of the effort to ensure greater public and patient involvement in the NHS, the Government will also introduce a “Local Healthcare Bill” in the summer which will, for example, seek to ensure direct elections to local Health Boards.
Given the recent flurry of legislation, this conference offers a timely opportunity for participants to explore the ambition; the focus; the structures; and the delivery of the Government’s local public health strategy.
