Money Advice Conference, 13th January 2009, Edinburgh

Speakers Include:

Fergus Ewing, MSP: Minister for Community Safety

Gillian Thompson, Accountant in Bankruptcy: Scottish Government

Yvonne Gallacher, Chief Executive: Money Advice Scotland

"The number of people declaring themselves bankrupt in Scotland is up 162% on the same period last year...the number of companies entering liquidation increased by 30% in the last quarter." [BBC News Scotland 16 October 2008, based on figures from Accountant in Bankruptcy]

This timely conference will highlight the current economic situation and its likely implications for both companies and individuals. Whilst much of the increase in bankruptcies has been attributed to the Bankruptcy and Diligence Act (2007) which came into effect earlier this year, there can be no doubt that the world economic downturn will have its financial casualties.

An overview of current government policy and programmes will serve to pinpoint those activities that will bring the most relief to Scots who are struggling financially; whilst other speakers will identify specific trends which are of concern to providers of money advice, debt management and financial education.

Conference delegates will hear case studies and best practice examples to enable the sharing of knowledge and experience in the delivery of money advice, debt management and financial education.
