- Restorative Practices in Education

Due to popular demand at our September 2007 conference we are now running a 2nd event in Aberdeen.

6 February 2008 - Hilton Aberdeen Treetops

Restorative Practices in schools developed out of a growing interest in Restorative Justice. Schools looking for solutions to concerns about basic indiscipline, disaffection and aggressive behaviour have been attracted by its basic premise – the need to address incidents of harm and restore good relationships when there has been conflict and to develop an ethos, policies and practices that minimise the possibility of conflict arising.

This approach acknowledges that schooling is a complex task and that teachers’ work can often be unduly challenging and stressful.

In 2004, as part of the ‘Better Behaviour, Better Learning’ Initiative, funding was provided for a two-year pilot project on Restorative Practices (RP) in schools within 3 Scottish Local Authorities – Fife, Highland and North Lanarkshire. The evaluation of this pilot is shortly to be published by the University of Edinburgh.

This one-day conference offers participants an opportunity to learn from successful practice in the pilot schools and from elsewhere in Scotland.

Through a combination of plenary sessions and participatory workshops, the conference will look at the impact of Restorative Practices (RP) on school life and culture; the potential of RP within wider discipline and behaviour management strategies and whether a uniquely Scottish approach to RP is emerging.
