5th Annual MacKay Hannah Emergency Planning Conference: Planning - Best Practice - Threats

Friday 18 September 2009, George Hotel, Edinburgh

Keynote Speaker: Bruce Mann, Director, Cabinet Office Civil Contingencies Secretariat

The aim of the Scottish and UK Governments is to reduce the risk from emergencies so that people can go about their business freely and with confidence. This conference will map out both the big picture in future threats and challenges and the detail on best practice across a range of case studies.

The Civil Contingencies Secretariat sits within the Cabinet Office at the heart of the UK government and works in partnership with government departments, the devolved administrations and other key stakeholders to enhance the UK's ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

This conference will hear first hand from the Director of the Cabinet Office Civil Contingencies Secretariat on the Government's UK Resiliance strategy. The conference also provides an excellent opportunity to learn contingency planning lessons from those at the front line and to understand future developments in planning practice and organisation including:

  • the current Swine Flu pandemic
  • the Audit Scotland report on emergency planning
  • 2012 Olympic planning - pointers for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games
  • the East Ayrshire train derailment
  • crisis media management of the 2007 Glasgow Airport terrorist attack
  • lessons learned from the English and Welsh summer floods of 2007 and the establishment of the flood forecasting centre

All these issues will be covered at this conference and will include ‘real life' case studies which will provide invaluable information in helping to prepare for future emergencies. Additional speakers and topics will be added as the programme is further developed.
